What Are the Penalties for Cocaine Possession in Indiana?

Have you recently been arrested on suspicion of cocaine possession? If so, you’re probably wondering what’s going to happen if the judge or jury finds you guilty. Indiana takes drug possession seriously, and as such, your freedom will be on the line as you head to court. To learn more about what to expect from a guilty cocaine possession verdict, continue reading.

Legal Consequences of a Conviction

If you are convicted of a cocaine possession charge, your penalties will be based on a couple of different factors, including how much cocaine you allegedly had on your person and where you were arrested on your cocaine possession charges.

For example, if you were found to have less than three grams of cocaine on you, you’d be facing a level 6 felony. This is punishable by anywhere between six months and two-and-a-half years in prison, along with fines not to exceed $10,000. If you were in possession of more than three grams of cocaine, you’ll be facing a level 5 felony, which means you could spend up to six years in prison.

Additionally, if you were within 1,000 feet of a school, your penalties would increase drastically. Possession of three grams near a school is considered a level 4 felony, which is punishable by a maximum of sixteen years in prison and fines of up to $10,000. Carrying more than three grams could land you in prison for up to forty years.

As can be seen, the ramifications for a cocaine possession conviction are severe, but these legal penalties aren’t the only consequences you’ll face. An experienced attorney can help you avoid a guilty verdict that could effectively ruin your life.

Other Ways Your Life Could Be Impacted if You’re Found Guilty

As previously mentioned, you won’t be suffering just from legal penalties if you are found guilty of cocaine possession. Not only will you be forever labeled a felon, but this status could prevent you from the following:

  • Finding a good job
  • Being approved for federal student loans
  • Maintaining child custody rights
  • Finding an affordable place to live

When the consequences of a conviction are so great, you’ll want a highly trained cocaine possession lawyer to defend your case.
