Vigo County Theft Lawyer

If you have recently been arrested on a theft charge and are hoping to retain an experienced criminal defense team, get in touch with a theft attorney in Vigo County for assistance with avoiding a conviction.

Even simply being accused of theft can damage your reputation. A person can be charged with theft when they have taken something that isn’t theirs. However, there are different types of theft and varying penalties you could face, which is why it’s well-advised that you secure a reputable defense attorney after you are released from custody.

Your lawyer can begin working on your case immediately so you can put this situation behind you. Your Vigo County theft lawyer from Rowdy G. Williams Law Firm is more than prepared to establish reasonable doubt in your case. We can also negotiate an acceptable plea bargain with the prosecuting attorney if it would be in your best interests.

In either case, when you choose to work with our firm, you can be sure that you’ve obtained high-quality legal representation against your theft charge.

What Happens When You Are Convicted on a Theft Charge?

If you are found guilty of a theft charge, your life could be forever changed. The penalties associated with a theft conviction will vary depending on what type of theft you were charged with. Continue reading for more information about the different types of theft and their penalties:

Petty Theft

A petty theft charge means you’ve been accused of stealing property of $750 or less. Petty theft is a Class A misdemeanor in Indiana, and the consequences of a conviction can include up to a year in jail and fines of up to $5,000.

Grand Theft

If you have been accused of grand theft, the property you’re accused of stealing will be valued at $750 or more. If the property is valued somewhere between $750 and $50,000, you’ll be facing level 6 felony charges, which are punishable by up to two-and-one-half years in prison and fines not to exceed $10,000.

Property that is valued at more than $50,000 is grounds for level 5 felony charges. A conviction of this magnitude would typically see fines up to $10,000 and a prison sentence of up to six years.

Ways Your Lawyer Can Defend Your Case

The defensive strategy your attorney will use to defend your case will largely depend on the individual circumstances of your case. For instance, in some cases, it is appropriate to argue that the property you are accused of stealing was actually yours. Other times, an intoxication defense could be more likely to benefit your case.

These are just a couple of ways your lawyer can defend your theft charge, but you’ll need to speak with your attorney to learn more about what you can expect to happen with your defense.
